Tontine (California, USA 2023)

Director Rebecca Murga hired me once again to work on the soundtrack of this exciting short format narrative film project.

A ‘Tontine’ is a form of money lending which combines elements of a group investment and a lottery, traditionally used as a way to raise capital. The screenplay by Soun Oeng follows the story of a Cambodian immigrant in America who participates in a Tontine with the hopes of winning funds vital to securing the future of her struggling donut business. Unforeseen events however turn blessings into a nightmare.

The director and screenwriter/producer wanted a culturally reverent score, with elements of Cambodian traditional music. I researched Khmer classical music and recorded various percussive and woodwind instruments to invoke the rich sonic tapestry of Cambodia, while keeping the music modern and dynamic with hybrid electronics and orchestral cinematic devices.
